Things to Know Before You Install Air Conditioning in Your Home

Entrance to a home with an air conditioner unit below the window.

It may be hard to believe, especially with the way the weather has been the past few weeks in Cleveland, that spring is soon upon us.  Which means the warmer months are fast approaching.  If you don’t already have one, you may be considering installing an air conditioner (or you may be thinking it’s time to install a new one).  A new air conditioner will help make those hot summer days much more bearable.  But before have your new air conditioner installed, though, there are a few things you should know.

The Right Size is Crucial

Just like the size of your furnace is important, so, too, is the size of your air conditioner.  Getting the measurements just right is essential for optimal performance.  Bigger is not always better.  An air conditioner that is too big will cool your house so quickly that it will not have sufficient time to dehumidify the air (which is an important factor in comfort).  On the opposite end of the spectrum, if your air conditioner is too small, it will be running all the time.  Not only will this drive your energy bills painfully high, it will wear out your new air conditioner early, meaning you will have to replace it much sooner than anticipated.  An air conditioning installation expert will be able to accurately calculate the load of your home, which takes into account many factors, including square footage and the number (and size) of your windows.

You Don’t Necessarily Need Ducts

If you already have an existing central air conditioner that needs replacing, or forced air heat, your new equipment can be directly connected to existing ducts.  However, if your ducts are old, your efficiency can suffer, leading to higher energy bills.  Inefficient ducts can be sealed.  If you don’t have ducts, or your old ones are in really bad shape, you could have new ducts installed.  Or, you could choose to go ductless.  Ductless air conditioning creates zones, which can be individually controlled, improving the efficiency of your air conditioner.

Regardless, You Will Need a Filter

No matter if you choose ducts or to go ductless, you will need to have a filter for your air conditioner.  A high-quality filter cleans the air as it moves through the system, which helps to reduce dust, pollen, allergens and other contaminants that can be irritating to your eyes and your respiratory system.  More than that, a good filter keeps the interior of your air conditioning system clean, ensuring its efficiency.

With a new air conditioner in place before the warm weather finally arrives, you will be more than prepared.  And for all of your air conditioner installation needs (along with maintenance and repairs), the experts at Fred’s Home Services are here for you.  Give us a call today to learn more!
