Installing a New Furnace? Be Sure to Maintain Proper Venting!

Gas furnace

Purchasing and installing a new furnace can be a costly and complex process. Still, when you’re putting in the new furnace, you need to take your time and make sure it’s done right. You can’t afford to have your furnace installed incorrectly.

Why is this the case? Other appliances can be put in incorrectly and, although the results will be a pain to deal with, they likely won’t be too dangerous. For example, an improperly-installed water softener could lead to flooding and property loss. But it wouldn’t be very likely to be fatal.

In contrast, an improperly installed natural gas furnace, to put it bluntly, can kill. This can happen in a variety of ways. For one thing, natural gas is highly flammable. If you install a furnace and don’t get the gas lines sealed correctly, gas can leak out into the building. Then, as soon as it comes into contact with a spark, it will ignite and lead to a serious fire or even an explosion.

Another way an improperly installed furnace can have lethal results is through improper venting. A gas furnace produces carbon monoxide as a byproduct of burning natural gas. Carbon monoxide is odorless, colorless, and can be fatal.

A carbon monoxide leak can actually be more dangerous than a leaking gas line because at least natural gas has an identifiable odor and you would have a chance to take corrective steps. On the other hand, carbon monoxide has no such telltale scent, and its victims often never realize they are breathing it in.

Proper venting is key

If you’re putting in a new furnace, you have to be sure to follow the applicable code regarding the venting system. This code varies from place to place, so be sure to check with the relevant government entity to make sure you’re getting it right.

If you are replacing a furnace, you may think you can just use the existing ventilation system. While this seems like a good idea in theory, in reality it may not suffice, as code requirements change over time and according to the specific equipment being installed.
